Evelien Krikhaar, ELLiE Project Country Manager
Evelien Krikhaar is a senior staff member of the National Center for Language Education, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands. With MAs in Experimental Phonetics (1991) and Dutch Linguistics (1992) from the University of Utrecht., she worked at the University of Groningen, as a psycholinguistic researcher and teacher on first language acquisition from 1992-2008. During this period she conducted several longitudinal studies and cross-linguistic research on the acquisition of Dutch in comparison to English and Hungarian. Key research related to Dutch first language acquisition in both typically and atypically developing populations (e.g. children with Specific Language Impairment or Developmental Dyslexia).
In 1999 and 2000, she also served as a member of the Hungarian-Dutch Language Acquisition Group for the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS), contributing to international research related to spontaneous production for Dutch and Hungarian children. From 2000 to 2008, she worked as research coordinator of the Groningen Lab for the Dutch Dyslexia Project, a nationwide longitudinal study on early precursors of developmental dyslexia. Within this project, her expertise related to early psycho-linguistic markers of risk for developmental dyslexia in children of 0-8 years.
Since January 2009 Evelien has been based at the Expertise centrum, working as Project leader in research and development related to early language production, reading and dyslexia in primary education. National Center for Language Education >
National Center for Language Education > is an autonomous research and development institute affiliated to Radboud University, Nijmegen. The Center aims at improving the teaching and learning of (Dutch) language arts in elementary schools. Research and development projects seek to discover and document those school conditions that encourage children to become skilled and motivated communicators, both orally and in writing. Researchers from various disciplines conduct small-scale studies with teachers and students from widely differing socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds from preschool to grade ten. Research is undertaken collaboratively with teachers, educators and school councillors. Recent topics have included oral communication, reading and writing, reading difficulties, vocabulary, and evaluation of achievement. Several research projects are conducted in collaboration with the section Pedagogical and Educational Science of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
